| So I got into a store last week. It was up in Sanford. One fun thing about it is that it is right down the street, in the same block, as Little Fish Huge Pond. The crazy bar where I have so many fun memories.
We should close out opening day there ;)

| Living in Missouri, it wasn't to rare an experience to be driving down a long country road and coming up on a box turtle. I would often pull over and take him off the road and release him in the field or sometimes take home to show the kids and release him somewhere on our property. I love turtles. (In college I had a pet turtle, named Myrtle. He was as big as my pinky.)
Now, living in Florida, things have been a little different. Not only have I seen Alligators, Boars, and Sand Hill Cranes as normally as I would see deer in Missouri, but I have also seen a few turtles. In the past month I have seen them up-close! The last two weeks I saw a water-turtle (don't know what they are called yet.) Both times I was on a dock and he (turtles always seem to be boys to me) swam right under us. It was so cool.
Today was the coolest though. I was driving to church when in the middle of the road was a Painted Turtle. I pulled over. I looked him over, not knowing if he was anything like the snapping turtles we have back home.... I saw no claws and no way for him to bite me if I had his shell, so I decided I would rescue him. I can't believe I got to hold one of these beautiful ancient creatures... it is so amazing. I walked him down to lake formosa in my red dress with beige pumps. As I got close to the water, he flapped haphazardly, begging for me to drop him. His little flappers hit my skin, feeling a bit cold and rubbery. Once I had him on the ground, he dove into the water. It was amazing.
On my way back from church, wouldn't ya know, another turtle. More of a land dweller i think, looking like the box turtle type I know. I dumped him off in the same spot.
I have no idea if I actually rescued anyone... there might be a huge exodus of turtles from Lake Formosa due to pollution, gang violence, homeless population- i don't know. I am so thankful for the opportunity to be so close and at least get them out of the street. | | |
